Zingerman's Deli

On our way home from our Providence trip, Scottie and I stopped in Ann Arbor for a late lunch as he had a class to attend.  Lucky for me, since it was an odd time of the day and on a weekday, we figured it would be perfect timing to hit up Zingerman's Deli.

Zingerman's was founded in 1982 by Paul Saginaw and Ari Weinzweig who originally wanted to name their deli, Greenberg's.  However, since another deli already had rights to the name, they eventually came up with Zingerman's simply for the letter "z" and the fact that it could be located easily in the Yellow Pages!   As it quickly became a local favorite, the founders expanded their business over the years to include a bakehouse,  catering, creamery, coffeehouse, a mail order business, a candy business, and finally the Zingerman's Roadhouse, which we  tried out two years ago with my Mom and Tara.  If you live in Metro Detroit and especially if you live in Ann Arbor, you hear about Zingerman's quite often as the best deli sandwich, best breads, etc.  The line out the door for breakfast and lunch during peak times can be ridiculous but is also a testament to their success.

Their deli menu was a bit ridiculous with so many options included build you own deli sandwiches, but I just zero'd in on the turkey sandwich options going for the #73 Tarb's Tenacious Turkey, which I chose particularly for the grilled farmhouse bread and avocado.  But it also included Wisconsin muenster cheese, tomato & plenty of Zingerman’s Russian dressing.  The turkey, cheese, bread, and avocado were excellent, and I could have used a little less dressing on the side, but the sandwich certainly was robust.  I felt like I just ate two meals!  While the sandwich and experience were certainly worth the visit, I'm not sure I would wait in a line an hour deep to get my hands on this sandwich.  Just saying.
