After devouring some Sakana Sushi in Ferndale, we arrived at St. Andrew's Hall a little confused as to how to get into The Shelter, which is in the basement, rear side of the hall, but eventually we figured out there was a back entrance. There was a small ticket counter where we purchased our $14 tickets (cheapest concert we've been to in a long time!) and entered what reminded me of a really small and dark Schubas Tavern in Chicago (but certainly nowhere near as well-known). There was literally a small bar, a standing room area that could hold maybe 50 people, and stage that was crammed with all sorts of instruments.
There were two openers, so for $14, we certainly got a steal out of this show. One of the openers, Future Feats, were from Chicago, and most closely resembled Youngblood Hawke's energy and sound bouncing around the stage with some solid percussion. While the other opener, The Colourist, seemed a little more established with a sound closer to Keane.
After brief intermissions behind the openers, Youngblood Hawke turned up the heat and energy rocking the joint with their famous hits: We Come Runnin', Stars, Dannyboy, Forever, and Rootless. It was a great show, and we enjoyed watching from way up close!
