After spending 3 days in Savannah (and on Tybee Island), we drove about an hour out to Hilton Head Island in South Carolina (a new state for us to check off!). The night before we actually drove out for a party for Rachel and Ryan, and we stopped in at the Hilton Head Brewery. The beers were so-so, but it was nice that they have a brewery on the island!
We spent the entire day before Rachel and Ryan's wedding biking on the beach! Hilton Head beaches had hard-packed sand so you could easily bike along them. We started near the Coligny Circle near Pope Avenue by our hotel and biked to the Sea Pines Plantation. It was maybe 5-6 miles?
By that point, we were ready for a pit stop at the infamous Salty Dog Cafe for a bite and drink! After the refreshing stop, we biked past the Harbour Town Golf Links in Sea Pines Resort, which was architected by Jack Nicklaus. This is where the Heritage Classic, a famous golf tournament is played.
We stumbled upon the Harbour Town Lighthouse built in 1970. Some who thought it senseless to build such a
structure in an effort to attract boaters along the Intercoastal
Waterway, called it "Fraser's Folly". However, the lighthouse is strategically situated for cameras
looking down on the 18th fairway of the Harbour Town Golf Links during
the Heritage Classic. Plus, how can you beat a red-and-white striped lighthouse! It has become a symbol for Hilton Head Island and all of South Carolina.
At the top, we had a nice view of some of the other islands and the 18th green! Unfortunately, it started raining later in the evening so the wedding ceremony couldn't take place on the 18th, but it cleared up for a nice reception and a lot of dancing!
Great times in the South! Congratulations Ryan and Rachel!
