2nd Annual Detroit Beer Week

To continue our weekend back in Birmingham, we headed out to Detroit just the two of us to the kick off event for the 2nd Annual Detroit Beer Week called "Tap: Detroit".  This was a charity beer and food pairing event at St. Andrew's Hall benefiting Pints for Prostrates, a charity to build awareness and fund research for prostrate cancer.  More about Detroit Beer Week below.
Detroit Beer Week promotes Detroit’s thriving craft beer culture by sponsoring events throughout an eleven-day period with the goals of attracting beer tourism, fostering knowledge of our regional brewing heritage, and serving as a showcase for Detroit’s breweries, restaurants, pubs, and other businesses with ties to the craft beer community.
Detroit Beer Week is produced by Liquid Table, a local organization whose mission is to promote awareness and increase the visibility of fresh, hand-crafted beer, wine, cider, mead and spirits through education and participation in community events, production of public and private events, and consulting services to the beverage alcohol industry.
Tap: Detroit included tasting stations from eight local restaurants to pair with Michigan-brewed beers and Michigan spirits.  Scottie and I made our way from station to station sampling some tasting beers and collecting some free stuff!

Upon conclusion of the event, we shuffled over to the Grand Trunk Pub located within the Grand Trunk Railway Station which dates back to 1879 as a jewelry store; however, it was later purchased by the railway as a ticket office.  More evidence of some of the unique architecture and rich history that still remains in Detroit.  Read more about the history here.  But let's be honest, we really were here because we've read about their excellent beer selection, and it did not disappoint.  More pictures from the evening in my photo album.
