It's been a few months now since Granite City Food & Brewery opened up in Troy; however, we finally made it out for an official sampling. Based in St. Cloud, Minnesota, this brewery patented their own brewing process, Fermentus Interruptus, that allows them to make their brewing more efficient as they expanded locations throughout the United States. The brewing process essentially allows them to "ship sweet liquid called wort, from [their] central brewing facility to individual stores. When this liquid reaches the stores, [they] begin the fermentation process and complete the brewing."
While we were familiar with Granite City since we've been to their location in St. Louis, we thought we'd give this new location a shot since it was just in our neighborhood. Surprisingly, we found their Broad Axe Stout, an oatmeal stout, to be up to standards; however, the rest of the beer was just average. On the same token, similar to other microbreweries, they had an extensive, unique menu that offered something for anybody. While definitely a little more commercial than your average breweries in Michigan, this is certainly a nice addition to the Troy restaurant scene as it's all about the food and beer atmosphere as opposed to a who's who in Troy. Good work!
