Last February, we attended our first Detroit Red Wings game at Joe Louis Arena (well, first for me, and first for Scottie since we moved here, I think) against the Edmonton Oilers, and a few months later, we went back to see them play against my boys from the 'Lou, the Blues. That was the 2008-2009 season when the Red Wings unsuccessfully attempted to make it back-to-back Stanley Cup Champions. During the 2009-2010 season, we never ended up making it out for a game as our one attempt ended in failure.
Thus, Scottie made it a point to get on the horse a little earlier this season picking up some seats for the Red Wings versus his favorite team, the Los Angeles Kings. We battled some brutal weather to get downtown, and it appears not everyone decided to join us for this game. It looked pretty darn empty in the Joe as the puck went down to open the first period.
The Kings took an early lead at the end of the first period despite being outshot by the Red Wings 2 to 1. Almost exact same result at the end of the second period. The crowd (excluding Scottie and maybe 3 other Kings' in the stands) rallied around their team in the opening minutes of the third period. This only lasted so long as Kopitar scored within the first minute of the third period to silence the arena. Despite the amount of shots on goal the Wings took in comparison to the Kings, they still couldn't find the net. Meanwhile the Kings picked up two additional goals, and they completed a successful shut-out of the Red Wings, 5-0.
Scottie erupted in cheer each time the Kings scored, and he went home a very, happy man.
