This appears to be the month of sushi craving or we're just trying to knock off our list of restaurants to try in Metro Detroit. Tonight's adventure took us downtown to Wasabi Korean & Japanese Restaurant near the DIA in Midtown. I found this place awhile back after reading about it in a Model D Media article and on the Metromix First Taste review, however, with our busy year in 2009, we never made it around to giving it a taste.
Wasabi occupies a small spot on part of the first floor of the Park Shelton condominium building. With little room for seating on the outside, I liked their creativity in extracting more space in an outdoor patio-like atmosphere in the lobby of the building. In fact, this is where we sat for our dinner, and even under a canopy.
As always, Scottie was disappointed to find the usual sushi rolls that contain mostly shellfish, so he had to order the usual (as of late) the Hwe Dup Bab (Assorted sliced raw over rice and mixed greens with Korean hot paste sauce on the side). However, I decided to pick out a few rolls so we could officially review the restaurant! I ended up going with these items on the sushi menu: Alaskan Roll (Rolled with Avocado, Cucumber & Salmon), Caterpilla Roll (Rolled with Spicy Tunal wrapped with sliced of Avocado and Masago on top), and the Wasabi Roll (Rolled with cooked Shrimp, Fresh Salmon, Yellowtail and Avocado, wrapped w/ sliced Tuna, Salmon, Avocado with Spicy Sauce and Wasabi Sauce.).
I think we were both very pleased with the entire meal including the salad, miso soup, and edamame! The sushi quality and piece size were up to expectations, and I think the presentation was one of the finest in the book. I enjoyed the balance of fish, rice, and cream sauces plus they didn't skimp on the avocado, which I think is also key. Wasabi might be my new backup for our leader in the clubhouse (still Asahi). Either way, these are both great sushi restaurants for Metro Detroit and Detroit. Hats off to the Koreans!
Nice review. Hope I can get a chance to try it before I leave. I live on the west coast but come to visit family here once a year. My sig. other is Korean (also from Chicago) and my comfort foods were all acquired from him. Love Korean Chirashi in summer. Also nice to see Michigan viewed through fresh eyes. It's interesting to see how it's changed through the years, but I will never miss the humidity, snow and ice =)
ReplyDeleteThanks for the comment! Too bad you don't live here and we'd certainly meet up with you. If you're looking for good sushi around Detroit, this is probably the best we've had other than the Asahi place but that's way out in the 'burbs. Midtown is fun area to explore too.
ReplyDeleteIf you're looking to bring the family to some Korean, definitely check out New Seoul Garden. We had our wedding rehearsal dinner there and it's fabulous!
Hope you have a nice rest of your trip and if you need any tips, let me know. I am trying to get this blog updated but it's a slow process. Cheers and safe travels!
