To celebrate Scottie's recent bonus, we decided to head back to one of our favorites restaurants, well, probably our favorite restaurant in Detroit, The Whitney. We are a little biased since we held our wedding ceremony and reception there last August, but the food is genuinely unbeatable in terms of price, quality, and creativity. The atmosphere is also very Detroit. On one hand, you're dining in a modestly updated mansion built in the 19th century along the main Detroit drag of Woodward Avenue in the heart of Midtown. On the other hand, a quick glance out the front window presents an abandoned lot across the street or a meal outdoors in the gardens invites at least one siren overheard. Remnants of the auto industry can be found nearby, however, new beginnings also appear down Woodward near the recently renovated Detroit Institute of Arts. The Whitney itself is constantly trying to reinvent itself along with the city by offering special events or meal deals that appeal to the tea party types as well as the happy hour types.
Tonight, we were lucky to arrive just in time for the last meal of the evening. While others enjoyed a post-theater or dinner dessert, we sat down at 10p.m. for dinner and a celebration! And we started with one of the best parts of our meal: wine! Lured by the bottle of the Green Point, Victoria, which was also served at our wedding, we were easily convinced as to why we chose this one in the first place. Moving on from the wine, we each opted for a different salad (unusual for us) as I stuck with one of the best, the Brie Salad (Baked "en croute" with organic mixed greens, toasted almonds, and Blueberry-Thyme Vinaigrette (including actual blueberries). Scottie ventured out of the standard to order the Tree Fruit salad with Honey Crisp Apples, Satsumas, Forelli Pears, Puff Pastry, Toasted Almonds, Bleu Cheese, and Roasted Shallot Vinaigrette. Both exceptional.
That's about all the meal I can recap as I'm back-posting this one! I'm pretty sure the meal went down just as smoothly...and quickly.
